Why trees and how will the funds be used?

Buy One Get One Tree will raise money to help restore Australia’s unique and precious landscapes. By restoring landscapes, the campaign will contribute to positive changes for people and nature, such as recreating habitat for native animals, increasing biodiversity, improving water quality and sequestering carbon.

We care about actively addressing environmental, social and community challenges, and aim to inspire our shoppers to do the same. Join IGA and Greening Australia and become a force for good in local communities.

Who is Greening Australia?

Greening Australia is a national environmental not-for-profit committed to restoring Australia’s diverse landscapes and protecting biodiversity in ways that benefit communities, economies, and nature. Greening Australia was established in 1982 in response to the serious impacts of tree decline on agriculture and the environment across Australia.

Over 40 years later, they remain dedicated to solving complex environmental problems through on-ground restoration at scale. With projects spanning the breadth of the country – from city suburbs to remote rural locations – Greening Australia applies a science-led, collaborative approach to deliver large scale restoration that addresses the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Why trees and how will the funds be used?

At Greening Australia, they don’t just plant trees, they rebuild ecosystem services. By restoring landscapes, Greening Australia can increase biodiversity, improve water quality, sequester carbon, and support local communities and economies. The funds will be used to contribute to Greening Australia’s ambitious goals to plant over 500 million native plants over 330,000 hectares by 2030. By restoring Australia’s diverse and iconic ecosystems, they help create healthy, productive landscapes where people and nature can thrive.

What type of trees will be planted and why?

Greening Australia establishes biodiverse native tree planting projects across Australia. Biodiversity describes the vast array and complexity of all living things on the planet, from the millions of microbes in a teaspoon of healthy soil to the majestic Mountain Ash, the tallest of flowering plants.

Biodiversity encompasses all the variability of genes, species and communities that make up their complex ecosystems, and is essential to the healthy function of ecosystems and all the goods and services that nature provides. Greening Australia will select plant species depending on numerous factors including location, terrain and climatic conditions to restore degraded ecosystems to help tackle biodiversity loss and climate change.

Where will the trees be planted?

With projects spanning the breadth of the country – from city suburbs to remote rural locations – Greening Australia is committed to restoring diverse landscapes across Australia. On the completion of the campaign, Greening Australia will assess which project locations are best suited, to ensure the trees are planted where they are needed most.

We’ve reached our goal of 20,000 trees in June 2023. The first lot of 20,000 are currently being planted in locations across Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. Keep an eye here to stay updated with future locations.

When will the trees be planted?

The first 20,000 trees are currently being planted across multiple locations in Australia. Trees from the second burst of the campaign will be planted in locations where they are needed most throughout the next 12 months.

What impact will 65,000 trees make to the environment?

Greening Australia has set ambitious goals for rebuilding nature to 2030 – including establishing half a billion native plants across Australia and 330,000 hectares of habitat. By establishing 65,000 trees with IGA, Greening Australia will be able to expand selected project sites to deliver large-scale restoration programs and tackle the twin crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change. 65,000 trees can help deliver quality outcomes for people and nature, such as improved habitat, water quality and carbon storage.

What has Greening Australia done so far?

Greening Australia was established in 1982, the International Year of the Tree, in response to the serious impacts of tree decline on agriculture and the environment across Australia. Today, they remain dedicated to solving complex environmental problems through on-ground restoration at scale. By restoring Australia’s diverse and iconic ecosystems, they help create healthy, productive landscapes where people and nature can thrive. They continually seek to improve and refine their methods, tools, and data to ensure their work meets the highest standards and delivers the best possible outcomes for both people and nature. From utilising machine learning to analysing data captured via satellites and drones, to trialling planting designs and treatments that will help their plantings thrive in challenging environments and future climate scenarios – they are building on their decades of practical expertise to explore innovative, scaleable approaches to restoration.
