How our stores are celebrating Lunar New Year with you

Lunar New Year is just around the corner, and a huge calendar event for many communities. This year, it’s kicking off on 12th February with the first new moon of the Lunar calendar, and ends 15 days later on the first full moon.

There’s nothing IGA’s independent store owners love more than to support their community and deliver the best of what’s on offer. Many of our stores celebrate Lunar New Year, so to recognise the event Locals Matter wanted to share how a couple of them will be helping their community to mark the special occasion.

Gift giving is an important tradition at Luna New Year, with friends, family and partners all exchanging gifts, often in the symbolic colours of red, yellow and gold. At the Thai Kee IGA Xpress in Haymarket, Sydney, specially curated traditional hampers are on sale, as well as traditional Radish Cakes and Glutinous Rice Cakes from Golden Century Chinatown which symbolise good luck and fortune. All of these delicious gifts are available exclusively for the celebration.

And to give back to their community, this year Thai Kee are offering special gift wrapping for their customers on other products purchased, for example on an assorted fruit or candy basket, as well as a rewards scheme in the lead up to Lunar New Year!

At IGA Rosebery & IGA Waterloo, where their local community is made up of many international students from all around the world, special snacks and food are also available for the event, such as tasty dumplings, sticky rice cakes, Chinese pancakes, dragon fruit, lychees and cherries.

Lee and Ivy, owners of IGA Rosebery & IGA Waterloo, also ensure their stores are decorated beautifully with traditional red lanterns for the celebrations.
