Clever ways to make the most of seasonal citrus

Grapefruit, lemons and oranges are in season during Spring, and they’re not just great to eat. So we’ve shared some clever tips and tricks on how to make the most of your citrus and waste less, from juicing for your foods and drinks to using the leftover peels:

1. Citrus Cutting Hack

First of all, how to make the most of your citrus and not leave any to waste using this simple trick.

With the citrus upright, cut it into 4 pieces, avoiding the ‘core’. Give it a good squeeze into a bowl and you’ll realise it’s much easier to get the juice out than when halved and quartered! Then give the core a twist to juice it, so none goes to waste.

2. Orange Clove Insect Hack

Do you want to get rid of flies and mosquitos in a more natural way? Or even if you have some leftover citrus that you need to use up, give this Orange Clove hack a go.

All you need to do is stick cloves into the orange skin (or lemons can be used too), and leave it on your kitchen counter, or hang them in your yard (somewhere you’re experiencing the flies and mossies), and watch them fly away!

3. Make Lemon Water

With any leftover citrus in your fruit bowl, try making a low calorie thirst quencher, filled with Vitamin C. It’s so easy to make and store in your fridge. Just mix the juice of a lemon with hot or cold water depending on your preference to make multiple glasses.

However, drink in moderation to help protect your teeth, and rinse your mouth with water after drinking.

4. DIY Citrus Cleaner

Whilst lemons are known for being great cleaning products, oranges and even grapefruits do a good job too. So don’t throw away your citrus peels, put them to good use and make a natural cleaning spray. It works a treat!

All you’ll need is a glass jar, white vinegar, a spray bottle and your leftover citrus peels:

  1. Add your peels to the jar
  2. Cover with vinegar
  3. Strain and dilute 1:1 with water
  4. Use as an all-purpose cleaner
